Carpooling
Another method of reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, but still enjoying the convenience of the automobile, is carpooling. When three or more people agree to use only one car to get to work, the reduction in vehicle use not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions, but also reduces traffic congestion on the roads.
Joining up with U of G's carpool service is a simple two-step process. Step one is to find people to carpool with, which can be done at the University of Guelph Carpool Zone website. Step two is to sign up at the Parking Services office, to receive your discount premium parking pass. Details on the registration process can be downloaded from the Parking services website.
You can also look for someone to share a car with on the CSA's website thecannon.ca, but the group must register on carpoolzone to be eligible for the discounted premium pass.
Carsharing
If you don't want to go through the expense of owning and maintaining a personal vehicle, there are various carsharing opportunities available. Toronto has ZipCar, and locally, there is the Guelph Car Co-op.
